Genre
Genre is a classification of literature, or other forms of entertainment.
Examples are music or art. It started as a categorisation system for
Ancient Greek literature, poetry, prose and performance which had
appropriate different genres for the narrative of the story. Actors
were also picked carefully so that the best actor would be the person
who told the story the best. After time, genre became a way to help
audiences make sense out of unpredictable art. In literature, genre
can be established by literary techniques, tone, or content. In film,
genre is the method based on similarities in narrative from which films
are constructed.

Action
Action films revolve around people facing challenges. The story is generally told through chases, fights, and also explosions. They tend to include physical stunts with lots of energy involving lots of destruction of surroundings. Sometimes, action films cross over with adventure films. There is usually a hero who struggles with situations and life threatening circumstances and also battles against the antagonist. Women in action films tend to be the romantic interests of the hero/heroine.
Adventure
Adventure films involve explorations which revolve around a protagonist. The films are usually set in an exotic area and include obstacles and strategies that the protagonist. The scenes that include action show the characters exploring the locations in which the film is set in. Typical setting examples may be a jungle or even a desert. The film may include a character being in a dangerous situation and needing to escape, or searching for lost or hidden treasure.
Comedy
Comedy films are an example of a genre in which there’s an emphasis on the humour in the film. They usually have a happy ending in which everything works out. Comedy films generally crossover with another genre because humour can be used in most genres. For example, an example of a crossover is a Romantic-Comedy. They tend to includes popular actors/actresses to advertise their films and rely on them to sell the film
Crime
A crime film is based on the action of a criminal mastermind. They usually revolve around the criminal narrating his rise and fall. Some crime films revolve around the victim whereas others revolve around the actual criminal. Crime films involves a plot with mystery which can also be achieved by the characters themselves.
Drama
The purpose of a dramatic film and storyline is to move the audience in an emotional way. They usually show real life situations with appropriate characters and settings. They typically involve conflict with other characters and different situations and cause the audience to relate to the character. Drama is another type of genre that can crossover with other genres like tragedy and comedy.
Horror
Most horror films are set in an isolated area with everything suggesting isolation. Sometimes the films are set in abandoned houses, hotels or even insane asylums. Low key lighting and colours like red or black are usually used to create a dark and scary atmosphere. The main character is typically the victim and/or hero of the film, horror films also usually have a police officer which is either good, or bad. A common crossover with the horror genre is science fiction. This can be used to create the danger in the film.
Musical/Dance
Musicals combine vocal performances and dance into the narrative of the film. The songs that are used can help tell the story or heighten the experience for the audience. The films generally use lots of different costumes and sets and focus on a well-known actor that is famous for either singing or dancing. Concepts within a musical include love and success to allow audiences to escape reality.
Science-Fiction
Science fiction films are imaginative and unrealistic with lots of different characters and settings. Science fiction genre shares a lot of the same conventions as a horror film, for example, many establishing shots are use. In sci-fi films they show the area to emphasise that the area isn’t what we would have expected it to be. They express the potential of technology used to destroy humankind.
War
War films recognise both the horror and heartbreak of war, with battle and conflict being the main plot of the films. Themes that are explored are battle, the effect of war on the society, stories of sacrifice, human issues, and survivor or escape stories. Costumes play an important part of war films because they help to understand the plot and set the scene.
Western
Western films typically take place in the final half of the 19th century and at the end of the American Civil west and are set in the American old west. However some western films take place in more contemporary settings.
