Double Page Spread Analysis

This double page spread has one main image on half of the page, with the title of the film as the biggest text on the page so that we are drawn to the title of the film. The actual image is of two characters who look like they are in fear and are screaming. This represents the genre of the film as a horror straight away. There are also two secondary images which also help represent the genre as they reveal more content about the film. Below the title is a brief description of what the director has previously done so that the audience can learn more about the director. The background isn’t a solid colour which makes the page more appealing and the decoration around the article links to the genre of the film. A pull out quote is used on the page to attract the audience and is also a quote from one of the directors to make it more interesting for the reader. A drop cap has been used at the start of the article to indicate the beginning making it look more effective. There is text besides the drop cap in the same colour which then changes to black. The fact that the beginning of the article is in a different font, size and colour makes it more visible to the audience. There is two columns on the page which is a typical convention as most review pages either have two or three columns to separate the page out.

The main image on this double page spread covers over half the whole page and also includes a secondary image on the page. The title of the short film is significantly smaller than the main title on the page. This may be because the audience recognises the magazine from the title. There is a main colour scheme of red, white and black, keeping the page looking simple yet effective. There is a separate text box that stands out from the rest of the page, which is all about the main plot and small details of the film. I feel like this is effective as you can gather a lot of information in a short amount of time. I think that the last paragraph in bold is extremely effective because this is a paragraph that is used to give a short final review on the film and I think that this helps make the structure of the whole page more effective as a whole.

This double page spread has a main image that covers half of the page, however, this page includes coverlines that are related to other articles in this magazine. The page includes a puff that says ‘Movie of the month’. The puff immediately catches the audiences eye and therefore draws attention towards it which makes the page more effective. The top of the page shows a banner of the main articles in the whole magazine which also makes the audience more interested about what else is in the magazine. Just like the previous magazine, the title of the page is bigger than the title of the film which may mean that the audience who read this page are interested more in the actual review andc not so much the film that is being reviewed. At the top of the page, there is a description of what different ratings mean. This shows the reader that 5 stars is the best rating, and 1 star is the worst rating. Just like the previous article, at the end of the review there is a short paragrapgh that sums up what has been said in the whole article.

I looked at different double page spreads so that i could work out the main codes and conventions that are used in a review page. I have used films of different genres as I found that there were not many double page spreads that come under the genre of paranormal, or horror. Below are 3 double page spreads that i looked at.
